Yorkshire Terrier
A Yorkshire Terrier grows hair, not fur. The coat is fine and silky. It keeps growing and it does not drop. Left long, it tangles every day. Kept short, it is a much smaller job. Either way, most Yorkies book in every eight weeks.

Where the coat comes from
The Yorkshire Terrier has a single coat. There is no soft layer underneath. The hair is fine, straight and silky, and it grows to the floor. Dogs NSW says a Yorkie in full coat needs daily brushing. The other option is a short clip with a weekly bath. Fine hair tangles fast, and it wraps around itself. Puppy coat is softer and often a different colour to the adult coat.
Why eight weeks
Most Yorkies live in a short trim. It suits a small dog who runs in the garden. Eight weeks keeps that trim in shape. It also keeps the hair out of the eyes and off the ground. If you want the long coat, the work moves to you and it is daily. Skip a few days and the knots start behind the ears. Hair also grows over the eyes and around the back end, so we tidy both.
If the coat is knotted to the skin, we clip short rather than pull it apart. We will show you where it started.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush daily in a long coat. Hold the hair up with one hand. Brush a thin line at a time, starting at the skin. In a short trim, every second or third day is enough.
- Comb after you brush. A comb finds the knots a brush slid over.
- Wipe under the eyes each day. Check the ears each week. A soft tie keeps the top hair out of the face.
Line brushing, shown by iGroomHub, our partner. This is how our groomers brush, and it is the way to do it at home.
What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
A good conditioner keeps long hair sliding past itself instead of knotting. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.
What we do for Yorkies at WOOOF
Most Yorkies book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you pick. It takes about 95 minutes. A short body with a longer head is the usual ask. Bring a photo if you have one. If the coat has knotted through, we go shorter and start again. Puppies start in the Happy Puppy Club.
What a Yorkshire Terrier groom costs
Set to a small dog with a long coat. That is where most Yorkies sit. Change it if yours is kept in a very short trim.

Common questions
How often does a Yorkshire Terrier need grooming?
Every eight weeks in a short trim. A Yorkie's hair keeps growing like human hair, so the trim grows out and the ends start to tangle.
Do Yorkshire Terriers shed?
Very little lands on the floor. The hair grows like human hair and stays in the coat, which is why a long coat needs brushing every day.
Where this comes from
Dogs NSW, Yorkshire Terrier. "A Yorkshire Terrier in coat will require daily brushing with the alternative of keeping in short clip, requiring a bath once a week."
RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.
RSPCA South Australia, The complete guide to grooming your dog. Poodles, poodle crosses and wiry haired terriers need regular combing. Trapped hair can cause ear and eye infections.
