The Standard Poodle is a big dog under a lot of coat. The coat keeps growing, like hair. It does not drop out, so it knots instead. Poodles also grow hair inside the ear. Most Standard Poodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
The Poodle has one thick curly coat with no soft layer underneath. Every hair it sheds stays put. That is why it knots. Dogs NSW says a Standard Poodle needs a professional bath, ear clean, nail trim and clip every six weeks. Puppy coat is soft and easy to brush. The adult coat arrives between nine and eighteen months. It is denser and it knots much faster. Many owners are caught out by that change.
Why six weeks
A curly coat traps loose hair close to the skin. It packs down where you cannot see it. On a large dog there is simply more of it. Six weeks keeps the coat short enough to comb through. Most pet Poodles wear a simple all over trim, not a show clip. Poodles grow hair inside the ear as well, so we check the ears at every visit. We tell you what we see and send you to your vet.
If a Standard Poodle comes in packed down to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Part the coat with one hand and brush one narrow line at a time, beginning at the skin. On a big dog, work one section at a time so you finish it.
- Comb through after brushing. If the comb does not reach the skin, the brush has missed a spot.
- Check the ears each week. Wipe the face and beard after meals.

This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
