Schnoodle
A Schnoodle is a Schnauzer crossed with a Poodle. The coat can go either way. Most are part wiry and part curly on the same dog. That mix holds loose hair instead of dropping it. Most Schnoodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
A Schnoodle is a cross, so there is no breed standard. Dogs NSW says Schnauzers do not shed their coats. Poodles hold their loose hair too. Put the two together and nothing falls out. Some Schnoodles get a harsh wiry jacket. Others get a soft curly coat. Many get patches of both, which is why the coat neither strips nor clips cleanly. We work out the plan on the dog in front of us.
Why six weeks
Loose hair stays in a Schnoodle coat. It works down to the skin and packs there. The soft patches knot first, often behind the ears and in the armpits. The wiry patches sit flat and look fine on top. Underneath they can be solid. Six weeks keeps the whole coat short enough to comb. The beard is its own job, because it picks up food and water at every meal. Beards need a wash and a comb far more often than the body.
If your Schnoodle arrives packed down to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart. We will show you the spots.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Hold the coat back and work a thin band at a time, always starting where the hair meets the skin. The soft patches need this most.
- Comb the beard out every day. Rinse it with warm water after meals and dry it off.
- Check behind the ears and under the front legs each week. Take the harness off while the coat is wet.

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.
What we do for Schnoodles at WOOOF
Most Schnoodles book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you choose. It takes about 95 minutes. We usually clip the body and scissor the beard and legs. Hand stripping does not suit a mixed coat like this. If the coat is already packed down we add Dematting.
