Pug

A Pug is short coated and heavy shedding. Owners are often surprised by how much hair comes off. A Pug is also flat faced, and that changes how we run the visit. We hand dry and we keep the session short. Most Pugs come in every ten weeks.

What the coat is like

A Pug has a double coat, even though it looks like one short layer. Under the smooth top hair sits a soft, dense layer. That layer comes out all year. Dogs NSW notes that a Pug sheds a great deal for such a short coat. The same page says the facial creases must be kept clean. There is a fold under the tail as well.

Why ten weeks

A flat faced dog cannot cool itself the way a long nosed dog can. So we do not use a hot cage dryer on a Pug. We hand dry, and we keep the session short. We watch the breathing the whole way through. If your dog needs a break, we stop and wait. The bath does most of the work on shedding. We clean and dry the face folds and the tail fold by hand.

We will not shave a Pug. The coat keeps heat out as well as in, and may not grow back the same. We hand dry, keep it short, and stop when needed.

Home care between grooms

  • Line brush once a week. Push the short hair back with your hand and brush a thin line at a time, down at the skin. A soft brush is enough.
  • Wipe the face folds and the fold under the tail. Then dry them properly.
  • Walk in the cool part of the day. Rinse and dry after a wet one. Dry the folds again afterwards.

Line brushing, shown by iGroomHub, our partner. This is how our groomers brush, and it is the way to do it at home.

What you need at home

  • Soft rubber grooming brush

Short hair still needs lifting. This takes out the loose layer without scratching the skin.

  • Soft cloth for the folds

Wipe each crease, then dry it. Damp left in a fold is the part that causes trouble.

  • Shampoo and conditioner

A proper wash loosens the dead hair so the dry can lift it out. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

What we do for Pugs at WOOOF

Most Pugs book a Luxe Wash and Dry. That is a bath, a hand dry, ears, nails and the folds cleaned and dried. It takes about 30 minutes. We keep the room cool and work in short bursts. Tell us if your Pug tires quickly. Deshedding can be added when the loose hair is heavy.

What a Pug groom costs

Set to a small dog with a short double coat. That is where most Pugs sit. We allow extra time for hand drying.

Common questions

How often does a Pug need grooming?

Every ten weeks. The visit is a wash, a hand dry, nails and the folds cleaned, not a haircut.

Do Pugs shed?

Yes, a great deal. There is a soft, dense layer under the short top coat, and it comes out all year.

Where this comes from

  1. Dogs NSW, Pug. "The Pug's facial creases need to be kept clean to avoid irritation and infection." The page also notes the Pug sheds heavily despite the short coat.

  2. Australian Veterinary Association, Avoiding use of dog breeds with exaggerated features in marketing. The AVA lists the flat-faced breeds as "Pugs, British Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pekinese, Shih Tzu and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels".

  3. Tripovich and others, Feeling the heat, Australian Veterinary Journal, 2025. A study of NSW dogs from 1997 to 2017. Deaths rose about 0.6% for each degree above 25°C, and 9.5% on days over 32°C. A double coat and a body weight over 15 kg were listed among the things that raise the risk.

  4. RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.
