A coat that keeps growing
This page covers Toy and Miniature Poodles, the two we see most. A Poodle has a single curly coat with no soft layer under it. It grows the way your own hair does, so it needs cutting rather than just tidying. Poodles also grow hair down inside the ear. Dogs NSW says a pet Poodle needs a daily check of eyes, feet and rear, and weekly brushing and ear cleaning.
Why six weeks
Six weeks is the number Dogs NSW gives, and it matches what we see. By then the coat has grown enough to lose its shape, and shed hair has packed into the curls near the skin. Feet and the face grow fastest. Leave it longer and the clip has to come shorter than you wanted, because we cut below the knots, not through them.
A clip pattern only works on a coat in good order. If the coat is matted we take it short and start the shape again from there.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Push the coat back and brush one thin band at a time, always beginning at the skin. Brushing over the top misses the knots underneath.
- Do the feet, the tail and behind the ears. These are the spots that knot while the body still looks fine.
- Check the ears each week and look for hair growing in the opening. Tell us and we will tidy it at the groom.

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

A Full Groom on a small Poodle takes about 95 minutes. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish in the clip you choose. Tell us the clip by name if you know it, or bring a photo.
