A Pomsky is a Pomeranian crossed with a Siberian Husky. Both parents carry a heavy double coat. So does the Pomsky. There is no set breed standard, so no two coats are the same. Most need a wash and dry every eight weeks.

Where the coat comes from
A Pomsky coat has two layers. A long outer layer sits over a soft, dense one. Dogs NSW says a Husky keeps that soft layer to hold heat out as well as in. The Pomeranian side brings a thick stand off coat that is brushed twice a week. Your dog may lean either way. You only find out once the adult coat comes in.
Why eight weeks
Owners are often told a Pomsky is easy to look after. It is not. Both parent breeds shed hard, and so does the cross. The soft layer lifts out in season and gets caught in the long hair on top. It packs behind the ears, in the ruff, on the trousers and along the tail. A bath and a strong dry lift most of it out. Brushing at home carries the weeks in between. Eight weeks suits most Pomskies.
Shaving is not something we do here. The coat shades the skin in summer, and it may come back thin.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush two or three times a week. Part the hair with one hand and brush a single narrow line, working outwards from the skin. Brush a thin line of hair at a time, starting at the skin. Then comb the same line to check it.
- Behind the ears, the ruff, the trousers and the tail need the most time.
- Brush more often in summer. Loose hair held at the skin stops air getting through.

- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Shampoo and conditioner
A proper wash loosens the dead hair so the dry can lift it out. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.
What we do for Pomskies at WOOOF
Most Pomskies book a Luxe Wash and Dry. That is a bath, a deep dry to the skin, a brush out, ears and nails. It takes about 50 minutes. We add Deshedding in the shedding season. It clears the loose soft layer without taking the coat off. Puppies start in the Happy Puppy Club.

Common questions
How often does a Pomsky need grooming?
Every eight weeks, and closer together while the coat is dropping. Line brush two or three times a week at home.
Do Pomskies shed?
Yes, a lot. Both parent breeds drop a soft, dense layer twice a year. In a Pomsky that hair gets caught in the longer coat on top instead of falling out.
Where this comes from
Tripovich and others, Feeling the heat, Australian Veterinary Journal, 2025. A study of NSW dogs from 1997 to 2017. Deaths rose about 0.6% for each degree above 25°C, and 9.5% on days over 32°C. A double coat and a body weight over 15 kg were listed among the things that raise the risk.
