The Pomeranian has two coats. There is a long outer coat and a dense soft layer underneath. Both need brushing right down to the skin. Loose hair sits in the coat and turns into knots. Most Pomeranians come in every eight weeks.

Where the coat comes from
The Pomeranian is a double coated breed. The outer coat is long and stands off the body. Under it sits a short, dense layer that holds the hair in. Dogs NSW says brushing twice a week with a soft slicker brush keeps a Pomeranian free of knots. Puppies go through a stage where the coat looks thin and patchy. The adult coat fills in later. Coat drops happen a few times a year.
Why eight weeks
Eight weeks keeps the coat clean and the knots out. It is a tidy, not a shave. Owners ask for a teddy bear cut a lot. We will talk you through it first. Clipping a double coat can change it for good. The hair may grow back patchy, soft or not at all. Nobody can tell you in advance which dogs it will happen to. A double coat also works both ways in the heat. It keeps warm air out as well as in.

Home care between grooms
- Line brush twice a week. Part the coat with one hand and brush one narrow line at a time, beginning at the skin. A slicker brush over the top only skims the surface.
- Brush more often when the coat drops. Big handfuls of the soft layer come away then.
- Check behind the ears and under the front legs each week. That is where the knots start.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
