Two coats on one dog
The body coat is wiry: short, harsh and weatherproof. The beard, eyebrows and legs are long and soft, and those are what knot. Dogs NSW says Schnauzers "do not shed their coats", so the dead hair has to be taken off. There are two ways to do that, and they are not the same.
Strip or clip, and why it matters
Hand stripping means pulling the dead hair out by hand. It keeps the coat harsh and keeps the colour strong. Clipping cuts the hair off instead. It is quicker and cheaper, and the coat comes back softer and paler each time. That change does not reverse. Dogs NSW notes clipping "is usual for dogs that are not shown". Both are fine choices. Just make it on purpose.
Talk to us before your first groom. Hand stripping is priced on the day, because it depends on the coat. Once a coat has been clipped for a year or two, stripping is no longer an option.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush the beard and legs every two to three days. Hold the hair up and brush a thin line at a time from the skin out.
- Wash and dry the beard after meals. A damp beard picks up food and starts to smell within days.
- Check the leg hair where it meets the body. That is where knots start on a Schnauzer.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
Use a plain shampoo and go easy on conditioner, which softens a wiry coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Every ten weeks for the body coat. The beard and legs need brushing every two to three days at home, whatever you do with the body.
Should I hand strip or clip my Schnauzer?
Hand stripping keeps the coat harsh and the colour strong, and takes longer. Clipping is quicker and cheaper, and the coat gets softer and paler over time. Neither is wrong, but the clipped change is permanent.
