Miniature Dachshund
People ask if a smooth Miniature Dachshund needs a groomer at all. The coat needs almost nothing. Nails, ears and a proper wash still do. That is what the visit is for, about every ten weeks. This page is set to the smooth coat.

What the smooth coat needs
Dogs NSW describes the smooth Dachshund coat as dense, short and smooth, with loose and supple skin. There is no long hair to knot and no thick soft layer to pack down. The hair still drops. The long haired Miniature Dachshund is a different page. That coat is soft and straight with feathering, and it needs a groom every eight weeks. Switch the coat selector if that is your dog.
Why ten weeks
Ten weeks is a nails, ears and skin visit. We wash the coat, dry it and check the ears. Short nails matter on a long backed dog. Long nails change the way the dog stands. We also handle Dachshunds a set way. We support the back and the chest together. We never lift under the front legs, and we ask you to do the same at home. We tell you what we see and leave the rest to your vet.
We keep the visit short and calm. A first timer gets a walk around the salon before anything starts.
Home care between grooms
- Once a week, run your hands over the whole dog. Feel along the back, the belly and the legs. Look at the nails and the ears while you are there.
- A soft brush once a week keeps the dropped hair off the couch. It takes two minutes.
- Lift with two hands, one under the chest and one under the back end. Wipe the ears with a soft cloth on the outside only.
What you need at home
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Shampoo and conditioner
A short coat still needs a proper wash to keep the skin comfortable. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.
What we do for Dachshunds at WOOOF
Most smooth Miniature Dachshunds book a Luxe Wash and Dry. That is a bath, a warm dry, an ear clean and nails. It takes about 25 minutes. It is the shortest service we run. If your Dachshund is the long haired kind, book the Full Groom instead and allow more time.
What a Miniature Dachshund groom costs
Set to a small dog with a short smooth coat. The long haired Miniature Dachshund sits on the long coat instead. Switch the selector for that one.

Common questions
How often does a Miniature Dachshund need grooming?
About every ten weeks. The coat needs very little, but nails, ears and a proper wash and dry still do.
Does a smooth Dachshund even need a groomer?
For the coat, no. For nails, ears and a wash that gets the dropped hair out, yes. Ten weeks keeps the nails short, which matters on a long backed dog.
Where this comes from
Dogs NSW, Dachshund (Smooth Haired). The breed standard describes the coat as "dense, short and smooth". The page gives no grooming advice, so we cite it only for what the coat is.
Dogs NSW, Dachshund (Long Haired). The coat is "soft and straight, or only slightly waved; longest under neck, on underparts of body and behind legs, where it forms abundant feathering".
RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.
PetSure, Pet Health Monitor 2026. Ear infections in adult dogs cost $473 on average to treat.
WOOOF groomers are not vets. We tell you what we see on the table and send you to your vet. Nothing here is vet advice.
