Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso coat grows to the floor and keeps going. Almost every Lhasa in Australia is kept short instead. Either way the coat knots, because the dropped hair stays in it. Most Lhasas book a Full Groom every eight weeks.

A coat that never lets go

A Lhasa has a long, heavy top coat with a soft layer under it. Dogs NSW says the breed does not shed its coat the way others do. The soft layer tangles and knots if it is not brushed out. The top can look brushed and feel smooth while the hair at the skin has packed down. A floor length coat needs daily work. A short pet clip needs a fraction of that.

Why eight weeks

Eight weeks suits a coat kept short. We bath, dry, comb the coat out and take it to the length you ask for. We tidy the face so your dog can see, and we trim around the feet. If the coat has packed down at the skin, a short clip is the kind way to fix it. Pulling a solid coat apart hurts. We will show you where it started so the next one is easier.

We clip short rather than pull a packed coat apart. That is a call we make with you at the door.

Home care between grooms

  • Line brush every second day. Push the coat back with one hand and work through one thin line at a time, from the skin out. Comb the same line after to check it is clear.
  • Go straight to where the coat rubs. Behind the ears, under the collar and under the front legs.
  • Wash and dry the beard after meals. Take the harness off while the coat is damp.

Line brushing, shown by iGroomHub, our partner. This is how our groomers brush, and it is the way to do it at home.

What you need at home

  • Steel comb

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.

  • Slicker brush

This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.

  • Shampoo and conditioner

A good conditioner keeps long hair sliding past itself instead of knotting. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

What we do for Lhasas at WOOOF

Most Lhasas book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a finish at the length you pick. It takes about 95 minutes. Bring a photo of what you want. If the coat is knotted we add Dematting, or we take it shorter and start again.

What a Lhasa Apso groom costs

Set to a small dog with a long coat kept in a pet trim. A full length coat takes longer and needs a shorter gap between visits.

Common questions

How often does a Lhasa Apso need grooming?

Every eight weeks in a short pet trim. The dropped hair stays in the coat, so it knots down at the skin where you cannot see it.

Do Lhasa Apsos shed?

Dogs NSW says the breed does not shed its coat the way others do. The hair stays in the coat and tangles there, which is why brushing to the skin matters so much.

Where this comes from

  1. Dogs NSW, Lhasa Apso. "It does not shed its coat as other breeds do and its undercoat becomes tangled and matted if not brushed out."

  2. RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.

  3. RSPCA South Australia, The complete guide to grooming your dog. Poodles, poodle crosses and wiry haired terriers need regular combing. Trapped hair can cause ear and eye infections.

  4. PetSure, Pet Health Monitor 2026. Ear infections in adult dogs cost $473 on average to treat.
