Lagotto Romagnolo
The Lagotto Romagnolo has a thick curly coat. It does not drop hair the way most dogs do. The loose hair stays in the coat and turns into knots. Most Lagottos need a groom every six weeks. Brushing at home is what keeps that groom simple.

What the coat is like
The Lagotto is an Italian working dog. It was bred to find truffles in wet ground. The coat is dense and curly all over, and it sheds water. Dogs NSW says the Lagotto never sheds hair, so the coat needs trimming on a regular basis. The hair your dog loses packs down near the skin instead. The beard, the front legs and the trousers hold the most.
Why six weeks
A curly coat holds every hair your dog loses. That hair works its way down and packs tight at the skin. The top can still feel soft to your hand. Underneath, it has gone solid. We scissor a Lagotto by hand and keep the shape round. That only works while a comb can still get through. If it cannot, going short is the kind way out.
A Lagotto is scissored by hand and not taken very short. If the coat has gone solid, we will show you where it started.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Part the coat with one hand and brush one narrow line at a time, beginning at the skin. Then work out towards the tips.
- Comb the same line after you brush it. If the comb stops, the knot is still there. The beard, the front legs and the backs of the ears go first.
- Dry the coat after a swim. Wet curly hair packs down fast.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Common questions
How often does a Lagotto Romagnolo need grooming?
Every six weeks. A Lagotto coat holds the hair your dog loses instead of dropping it, so knots form down at the skin.
Do Lagotto Romagnolos shed?
Not the way most dogs do. The hair your dog loses stays in the coat. That is why combing down to the skin every two to three days matters so much.
Where this comes from
Dogs NSW, Lagotto Romagnolo. "As it never sheds, the coat needs to be trimmed regularly. A bath, followed by combing, is necessary to prevent matting."
RSPCA South Australia, The complete guide to grooming your dog. Poodles, poodle crosses and wiry haired terriers need regular combing. Trapped hair can cause ear and eye infections.
RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.
PetSure, Pet Health Monitor 2026. Ear infections in adult dogs cost $473 on average to treat.
