Labradoodles do not all have the same coat. Most have a curly coat. Some have a long coat instead, which lies flatter and sheds. Curly is the one that knots, and it needs a groom every six weeks.

Two coats, one name
A Labradoodle is a Labrador crossed with a Poodle. There is no set breed standard, so the coat can go either way. Most get a curly coat, which is what we book them in as. Some get a long coat instead. It lies flatter, waves rather than curls, and drops hair the way a Labrador does. A curly coat holds every hair it sheds. A long coat mostly does not.
Why six weeks
If your dog has the curly coat, shed hair stays in it. That hair packs down at the skin and turns solid, out of sight. The top still feels soft. The RSPCA in South Australia says poodle crosses need regular combing to stop this. It also warns that trapped hair can rub the eyes and ears. A long-coated Labradoodle is easier, and can go longer between visits.

Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Hold the coat up with one hand and brush a thin line at a time, working out from the skin. Brushing over the top misses the knots underneath.
- Do the legs and chest as their own job. They knot first and they are the easiest bit to skip.
- Check the ears each week, and dry the coat right through after a swim.

- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
