Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russells come in three coats. Smooth, broken and rough. This page is set to the smooth one, which is short and double. Whichever coat you have, the visit is a wash, a dry and nails. Ten weeks suits most dogs.

Three coats, one breed

A smooth Jack Russell has short, flat hair over a soft layer underneath. A broken coat has longer hair on the face and the legs. A rough coat is longer and wiry all over. Dogs NSW says a Jack Russell needs little grooming and that a regular brush does the job. That holds for all three coats. A wiry one can be hand stripped if you want the hard coat kept.

Why ten weeks

The smooth coat sheds far more than owners expect. The hairs are short, white and stiff, and they stick into everything. A bath and a deep dry lift most of the loose hair out in one go. That is the main reason to book. We also do nails, ears and a look over the skin. Jack Russells dig, so we check between the toes and inside the back legs for grass seed.

We take the loose hair out instead of shaving. A shaved double coat can grow back rough.

Home care between grooms

  • Line brush once a week. Push the coat back with your hand, then brush a thin line at a time down at the skin. On a rough or broken coat, comb the beard and the legs too.
  • Check between the toes and inside the back legs after a dig.
  • A rub down with a damp cloth lifts loose hair off a smooth coat.

Line brushing, shown by iGroomHub, our partner. This is how our groomers brush, and it is the way to do it at home.

What you need at home

  • Slicker brush

This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.

  • Steel comb

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.

  • Shampoo and conditioner

A proper wash loosens the dead hair so the dry can lift it out. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

What we do for Jack Russells at WOOOF

Most Jack Russells book a Luxe Wash and Dry. That is a bath, a full dry, a brush out, ears and nails. It takes about 30 minutes. We add Deshedding when the coat is dropping heavily. If yours has the rough coat, ask about Hand stripping at our Manuka salon when you book.

What a Jack Russell Terrier groom costs

This page is set to a small dog with a short double coat, which is the smooth Jack Russell. If yours is long haired, change the coat to long. If it is wiry, change it to wire.

Common questions

How often does a Jack Russell Terrier need grooming?

Every ten weeks. A smooth Jack Russell needs no haircut, so the visit is a wash, a dry, nails and the loose hair out.

Do Jack Russells shed?

Yes, far more than the short coat suggests. The smooth coat has a soft layer underneath that comes out all year.

Where this comes from

  1. Dogs NSW, Jack Russell Terrier. "It requires little grooming even with a rough or broken coat. A regular brush will do the trick."

  2. Tripovich and others, Feeling the heat, Australian Veterinary Journal, 2025. A study of NSW dogs from 1997 to 2017. Deaths rose about 0.6% for each degree above 25°C, and 9.5% on days over 32°C. A double coat and a body weight over 15 kg were listed among the things that raise the risk.

  3. RSPCA Australia, Why and how should I groom my dog? Brush knots out before they turn into mats.

  4. PetSure, Pet Health Monitor 2026. Ear infections in adult dogs cost $473 on average to treat.
