A Groodle is a big dog under a lot of coat. The curly hair holds onto everything it sheds. Left alone it knots fast, and there is a great deal of it. Most Groodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
A Groodle is a Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle. Some people call it a Goldendoodle. There is no set breed standard, so the coat can go either way. Most get a thick curly coat with a soft layer underneath. Puppy hair changes to the adult coat somewhere around a year old. That is when most owners meet their first real knot.
Why six weeks
Size is the part people miss. A Groodle has the same coat problem as a small oodle, spread over a much bigger dog. Shed hair stays in the curls and packs down at the skin. The surface still feels soft while the base has gone solid. The RSPCA in South Australia says poodle crosses need regular combing. It also warns that trapped hair can rub the eyes and ears. On a Groodle, the legs and chest knot first.
If the coat is knotted to the skin we clip short. Pulling a big coat apart hurts, and it takes hours your dog has to stand through.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Lift the coat clear with one hand and take one thin line at a time, starting at the skin. Brushing over the top misses the knots underneath.
- Give the legs and chest their own turn. On a Groodle these knot before anywhere else, and they are easy to skip.
- Check the ears each week. Dry the coat properly after a swim or a wet walk.

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush

What we do for Groodles at WOOOF
A Groodle usually books a Full Groom: bath, full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish. It takes about 115 minutes, because there is a lot of coat to dry and shape. Bring a photo of the length you want. If the coat is tight we add dematting first. Puppies start in the Happy Puppy Club, before the adult coat comes in.

How often does a Groodle need grooming?
