A Springer carries a working coat. The body coat is double. The body hair is flat and weatherproof. The ears, chest and legs grow long feathering that knots. Ears are the thing to watch. Most Springers book a Full Groom every eight weeks.

Two kinds of hair
A Springer has a flat top coat with a soft layer under it. Together they keep water and cold out. That part of the coat is not cut. The feathering is different. Long hair hangs from the ears, the chest, the belly and the backs of the legs. It catches mud, seeds and water. Left alone it knots at the skin, and the ears are the first place it happens.
Why eight weeks
Eight weeks keeps the feathering short enough to manage. We tidy the ears, the feet and the legs. The body coat is washed, dried and deshedded, not clipped. Dogs NSW says Springer ears must be checked or cleaned at least once a week, because floppy ears can be prone to infection. We dry them, look inside and tell you what we see. Anything red or smelly is a job for your vet.
A Springer body coat can be clipped or stripped. Clipping is quicker and softens the coat over time. Tell us which you want.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush the feathering twice a week. Hold the hair up with one hand. Lift the coat clear with one hand and take one thin line at a time, starting at the skin. Then comb it to check you got the lot.
- Start under the ear flaps, behind the front legs and around the collar.
- Dry the ears after swimming and after a bath. Check them weekly. Pull grass seeds out of the feet before they work in.

What you need at home
- Undercoat rake
Pulls out the soft layer underneath. That is the hair that ends up on your floor.
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Shampoo and conditioner
A proper wash loosens the dead hair so the dry can lift it out. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Most Springers book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a tidy of the feathering. It takes about 115 minutes. We can add Deshedding to lift the loose hair out. Ask for Deshedding in spring, when the soft layer drops. If the ears or legs are knotted, we add Dematting.
