Thick coat, heavy ears
A Cocker has a flat or wavy top coat with a soft layer underneath. The soft layer is the part that knots. On top of that, the ears, chest, belly and legs carry long hair. Dogs NSW says to check the coat daily and pay "particular attention to the area under the front legs and elbow". That is exactly where we find them.
Why eight weeks
Two things run down at about the same speed. The soft layer underneath builds up and starts to pack against the skin. And hair grows around the ear opening, which keeps the ear damp. A damp ear that cannot get air is where trouble starts. PetSure says ear infections are one of the top three reasons Australian dogs see a vet, at $473 on average to treat.
We do not pluck ears. If an ear smells off, or your dog keeps shaking their head, we will tell you and send you to your vet.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Part the coat with one hand and brush one narrow line at a time, beginning at the skin.
- Do under the front legs and behind the ears. Dogs NSW names those as the spots to check daily.
- Lift each ear and look underneath every week. Dry the ears after a swim or a bath.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Undercoat rake
Pulls out the soft layer underneath. That is the hair that ends up on your floor.
- Shampoo and conditioner

How often does a Cocker Spaniel need grooming?

Can I have my Cocker clipped short?
