Where the coat comes from
A Cavoodle is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle. There is no set breed standard, so no two coats are the same. Most Cavoodles get the Poodle's curly coat. That is the harder one to look after. Puppy hair is soft and easy. It turns into a thick adult coat between ten and eighteen months. Knots usually start then.
Why six weeks
A curly coat traps the hair your dog sheds. The hair packs down near the skin, where you cannot see it. The top still feels soft. Underneath, it has gone solid. Once that happens, a short clip is the kind way to fix it. The RSPCA in South Australia says poodle crosses need regular combing. It also warns that trapped hair can rub the eyes and ears and cause infections. Cavoodles grow hair inside the ear as well.
If your Cavoodle comes in knotted to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart. We will show you where it started.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Hold the coat back with one hand and work a thin band at a time, from the skin out. Brushing over the top misses the knots underneath.
- Start where the coat rubs: behind the ears, under the collar, under the front legs, and the backs of the back legs.
- Check the ears each week. Take the harness off while the coat is wet.

- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Most Cavoodles book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you pick. It takes about 95 minutes. Bring a photo so we cut it the way you want. If the coat is already knotted we add dematting and bring the next visit forward. Puppies start in the Happy Puppy Club.
