The Brussels Griffon (Griffon Bruxellois) has a hard wire coat, a beard and a flat face. The coat is meant to be hand stripped, and WOOOF is one of the few salons that still do it. Most Brussels Griffons come in every ten weeks. The smooth-coated kind needs less.

What the coat is like
Dogs NSW says the breed comes in two coats, rough and smooth. Most Griffons we see are rough. That coat is harsh and wiry on top, with a softer layer under it, and the standard says it is hand stripped when shown. The smooth kind has a short, tight coat and no beard. A Griffon weighs three to five kilos. Dogs NSW calls the temperament terrier-like: lively, alert and opinionated.
Why ten weeks
Hand stripping takes the dead top hair out by hand, a few at a time. The new hair grows in hard and keeps its colour. Clip a wire coat instead and it grows back soft and pale. Ten weeks keeps a rolling coat, where some hair is always ready to come out. The beard is left long and combed. Food and water sit in it, so it knots and smells first. The folds beside the nose hold moisture too.
Griffons are flat-faced, so they can find it harder to breathe and to cool down. We hand dry rather than use a hot dryer, keep the appointment short, and stop if your dog needs a break.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush twice a week. Hold the coat up with one hand and brush a thin line at a time, down at the skin. Then comb the beard through.
- Wipe the beard after meals and dry it after a drink. Check the folds beside the nose while you are there, and keep them dry.
- Comb under the front legs and behind the ears each week, where the coat rubs, and check the ears.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin, then through the beard. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
Use a plain shampoo and go easy on conditioner, which softens a wire coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

How often does a Brussels Griffon need grooming?
