A Bordoodle is a Border Collie crossed with a Poodle. The coat is the part people underestimate. It is curly on top with a heavy soft layer underneath. That mix holds loose hair instead of dropping it. Most Bordoodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
A Bordoodle is a cross, so there is no breed standard. No two coats are the same. Most Bordoodles take the Poodle side and grow a curly coat. Underneath sits a soft layer from the Border Collie. Puppy hair is soft and forgiving. The adult coat comes in between ten and eighteen months. That is when knots usually start. The change can happen in a few weeks.
Why six weeks
A curly coat does not drop much hair. It keeps it. The loose hair works its way down and packs against the skin. The top of the coat still feels soft. Underneath it can be solid. Bordoodles carry a lot of coat behind the ears, under the collar and under the front legs. Those spots go first. Once the coat is packed down, a short clip is the kind way out. The RSPCA in South Australia says poodle crosses need regular combing.
If your Bordoodle arrives knotted to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart. We will show you the spots.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Push the coat back with one hand and work through one thin line at a time, from the skin out. Brushing over the top misses the knots underneath.
- Start where the coat rubs. That is behind the ears, under the collar, under the front legs and the backs of the back legs.
- Check the ears each week. Take the harness off while the coat is wet.

What you need at home
- Steel comb
Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Most Bordoodles book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you choose. It takes about 105 minutes. A medium dog with this much coat takes a long time to dry. Bring a photo so we cut it the way you want. If the coat is already packed down we add Dematting.
