A Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Poodle. It is a large dog with a lot of coat. Most have a curly coat with a heavy soft layer under it. Loose hair stays in there instead of dropping. Most Bernedoodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
A Bernedoodle is a cross, so there is no breed standard. Dogs NSW describes the Bernese coat as long, shining, straight or slightly wavy. The Poodle side brings the curly coat. Put them together and you get anything from wavy to tightly curly. Under it sits a heavy soft layer. That layer is what knots first. Puppy coat gives way to adult coat between ten and fourteen months.
Why six weeks
Size is the first reason. There is a lot of coat to get through, and it all needs doing to the skin. The soft layer underneath packs down where you cannot see it. The top still feels soft, so it is easy to miss. Six weeks keeps the coat short enough to comb. Drying is the second reason. A big dense coat holds water and takes a long time to dry properly. We build that time into the booking.
If your Bernedoodle arrives knotted to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart. We will show you the spots.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two days. Hold the coat back and work a thin band at a time, always starting where the hair meets the skin. Split the dog into sections so you can finish each one.
- Teach a big puppy to lie still for brushing. It makes every groom easier later.
- Check behind the ears and under the collar each week. Dry the coat well after a swim.

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner
The conditioner is the one that counts on this coat. Our range is made with chemists: 100% natural, vegan and palm oil free.

Most Bernedoodles book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you pick. It takes about 115 minutes. Big dogs get a table with room to stand and breaks when they need them. Bring a photo so we cut it the way you want. If the coat is packed down we add Dematting.
