An Aussiedoodle is an Australian Shepherd crossed with a Poodle. The Poodle side gives a curly coat. The Australian Shepherd side gives a thick soft layer underneath. The two together trap loose hair down at the skin. Most Aussiedoodles need a groom every six weeks.

Where the coat comes from
An Aussiedoodle is a cross, so there is no breed standard and no two coats match. Most have a curly coat with a soft layer trapped under it. Dogs NSW says Australian Shepherds shed more at certain times of the year. On an Aussiedoodle that shed hair has nowhere to go. It stays in the coat and knots from the skin outwards. Puppy coat changes to adult coat from about ten months.
Why six weeks
The knots start where you cannot see them. The top of the coat feels soft and looks fine. Down at the skin the hair has already packed down. That is why a quick brush over the top is not enough. Six weeks keeps the coat short enough to get a comb through. The RSPCA in South Australia says poodle crosses need regular combing. Trapped hair can also rub the eyes and ears. We check both at every visit.
If your Aussiedoodle comes in knotted to the skin, we clip short rather than pull the coat apart. We will show you the spots.
Home care between grooms
- Line brush every two to three days. Hold the coat up with one hand and brush a thin line at a time, working out from the skin. Brush a thin line at a time, starting down at the skin. Brushing over the top misses what is underneath.
- Start where the coat rubs. That is behind the ears, under the collar and under the front legs.
- Comb through after brushing. If the comb stops, go back with the brush. Check the ears each week.

Run it down to the skin. If it stops, you have found a knot.
- Slicker brush
This is the brush you line brush with. Follow it with the comb.
- Shampoo and conditioner

Most Aussiedoodles book a Full Groom. That is a bath, a full dry, ears, nails and a scissor finish at the length you pick. It takes about 105 minutes. Drying takes a while, because the soft layer holds water. Bring a photo so we cut it the way you want. If the coat is packed down we add Dematting.
